MIXED SENIORS SHOW GRIT! By Margie Lee, Team Captain

Thanks to all participants on the Mixed Seniors team. All I can say is, we showed true grit! The weather forecast would have intimidated all but the most intrepid of runners--but we are definitely in a category all our own (crazy?). Temps in the 80's with humidity setting in during the day! Added to the challenging, to say the least, terrain.

Despite losing team members to injuries, and nearly losing others, we pulled it off! Lev Volfson, in training for a super effort at Reach the Beach the following weekend, was voted All Star of the team, running way ahead of his estimated times and ending very strong! Margie Lee, who trotted (and walked--when she was hoping no one was looking!) the 11 mile second leg in the exact same time as last year, was rewarded with refreshing GFRC water from a competing GFRC team member (thanks John!) GFRC cheers (thanks Club!), and a dip in the lake. Bill Davidge hunkered down in the mid day heat and shadeless blacktop of the 3rd leg (funny how the thought "Why am I doing this?" while running becomes "I did this!!" upon completion). Karin Oleski breezed through her miles, all the while contemplating fielding a women’s 50+ team in the future (must’ve been the heat!). Diane Curley, our very own Energizer bunny who keeps going and going and going, ably covered the 6.4 mile 6th leg. Tom Abbott gained several positions in the 7th leg, thanks in part to the support of his wife Marge handing him glasses of very chilled water (it’s the ice!). Rika Van Willigen proved tough (not to mention a good sport) to pull off the last leg!

Many thanks to all. We finished in 9 hours and 33 minutes, 3rd out of 6 mixed seniors teams.
