Thanks and a Corporate Challenge for More Volunteers

The 112th running of the Boston Marathon is now in the history books, and once again the volunteers of the GFRC did a fabulous job. Congratulations to all who took part in this historic event.

Now, on to the JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge. We need to recruit up to 30 club members to staff the finish line, and other responsibilities of this unusual event to be held on Thursday evening, June 26.

The Corporate Challenge, a 13,000 “runner”, 3.5 mile “race” that begins and ends at the Boston Common on Charles Street in the Back Bay, will most likely start at 7:15 p.m. The event is not so much a road race as a semi-controlled rolling sea of humanity. If you think that the Marathon is crowded, imagine how 13,000 participants manage to crowd onto a 3.5-mile race course. The nature of the commitment would, as usual, be relatively low key with no heavy lifting required. Typically we work at the finish line and are responsible for identifying the first few overall winners, as well as top finishers in the CEO category. Volunteers should be present at Boston Common by 6:00 p.m., and most, if not all, volunteers would be released soon after the race ends, usually about 8:15 p.m. Although there are no cool jackets or pins given to volunteers, the t-shirts are typically very well designed. The other good news is that the Club’s treasury will benefit again. We should also be able to partially cover the parking expenses of volunteers.

If you are willing and are able to help out at the Corporate Challenge, please call Lonny Townley at 508-881-9657, or email at lonnyfran.ma@netzero.net. Club members, family members and friends, even perfect strangers, are all welcome to help out. No experience is required.
