New Bowditch Track Awaits Return Of Summer Meets

Congratulations to all those who ran the Boston Marathon. Rumor has it that it was on the warm side this year. We haven’t received a complete listing of times, as many members are too modest to call in their results. However, it is known that Keith Moore ran an outstanding race, finishing with 2:46 and change. Great work Keith!

After the lengthy and sometimes contentious process of selecting new colors, the club has rallied around turquoise and neon yellow. Over 80 club members submitted orders for a total of 94 uniforms (shorts & singlets) and 55 wind suits.

By early summer we should be over- whelming the opposition with our fashion statement, if not with our times. With this issue behind us, tranquility again reigns in the affairs of the GFTC, at least until its time to select the soup for our June banquet.

If you haven’t already done so, please be sure to send in your reservations for the June 18 banquet. This is our annual attempt to prove that runners do indeed know which hand to hold a knife and fork in, even though they don’t get asked out all that often. It is also the occasion on which we honor those who have contributed to the club’s achievements over the year, by awarding them tacky merchandise prizes rejected by the Home Shopping Network. You don’t want to miss it; the reservation form is elsewhere in this issue.

Summer track begins Wednesday, June 9, at the new Bowditch Field track. As always registration begins at 5:30 and the races start at 6:00. Also, as always, we absolutely depend on club volunteers to make this program successful. It’s important for volunteers to show up at 5:45 at the latest, so that we can make the officiating assignments. An exception to this is for those who run the softball throw, which usually doesn’t begin much before 6:30.

If anyone out there is willing to assist with the data management for the track meets, that would be a big help. All registration and results are kept in dBase III+ (DOS version). I’ve written the programs to enter the registrations and results, and update the various file. But the data entry has become very time-consuming with the increased popularity of the meets. If you are interested in lending a hand with this aspect of the work, please call me at (508) 881-4883.
