President’s Message – April 1992
March Madness: April Ambitions
This year’s Terrible Ten was the most successful ever. We had 191 finishers, including Rich Busa and Dong Sup Shim both of whom had run the Marlboro I0K earlier that morning. Barry informs me we generated over $660 from this year’s race, the most ever.
Congratulations to Dick Chesmore and Lonny Townley for another outstanding effort. Congratulations also to Karen Oleski for being the first woman Master at Marlboro with a time of 47:10; a feat, which earned her $75. At that rate she’s earning more per hour than a foreign car mechanic. Let’s hope she doesn’t abandon teaching.
Thanks to all the GFTC runners who ran/survived the Boylston 30K. While team results aren’t in yet, we definitely fielded a Masters and Seniors and possibly a Women’s Masters team. We were one short of having an Open team as well. Particular thanks go to Jack O’Rourke who encouraged many members to send in team entries, and also captained our Masters team. Jack had an outstanding race, covering the course in 2:05.
Linda Jeffrey was again host to her traditional St. Patrick’s Day- Fun Run on March 14. As usual, she served an extraordinary post- run feast topped off with real Irish coffee. Any club member who hasn’t attended these is missing a unique benefit of membership. Thank you, Linda.
Congratulations to Sarah Kiritsis-Taylor and her husband Simon on the birth of their first child, Trevor Samuel Taylor. Young Trevor arrived on March 3rd, and from all reports is happy and healthy. No word yet on his 10 K pace, but I’m sure Ted Tyler will have it calculated by our next membership update.
Between the Taylor’s and the Wagoner’s, we may have hit upon the secret of maintaining growth during a period of economic hardship. I’m going to recommend the Membership Director develop an official GFTC Fertility and Fecundity Kit, to encourage more of this. We can include appropriate fragrances, potions, incantations, and a four-color manual illustrated so clearly that even runners can follow it. We may be on to something here.
